Hublot brings back into its digital universe one of the most singular collaborations of its recent trajectory: Hublot x Jeff Koons, a project that translated the American artist’s visual imagery into the realm of haute horlogerie through a series of creations inspired by some of the most recognizable masterpieces in the history of art.
The initiative sprang from a complex and ambitious idea: to transfer the chromatic richness, composition and cultural dimension of paintings from different periods to a format as reduced and technical as that of a watch. To achieve this, Hublot drew on its contemporary design language, characterized by contrasts of materials and finishes, while Jeff Koons contributed his particular take on artistic iconography and visual culture.
The collaboration was articulated around the Hublot Classic Fusion collection, a platform especially suited to this dialogue between watchmaking and art because of the sobriety of its lines and the expansiveness of its dial. The result was a series of limited editions that took historical works as their starting point, reinterpreted with a contemporary sensibility, preserving the identity of each painting without relinquishing the technical character of the Swiss maison.
Among the references that inspired the project were Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Botticelli’s Venus, Alphonse Mucha’s Fleurs, Paul Gauguin’s Saint-Honoré and Antinous by an anonymous Roman artist. The selection brought together creative languages very distant from one another, from the Italian Renaissance to decorative symbolism, post-Impressionism and classical sculpture.Beyond using these works merely as decorative motifs, Hublot and Koons sought to establish a direct relationship between each artistic creation and the watch’s elements. The dials reproduced fragments of the selected paintings, while the case, the pushers, the finishes and certain design details were developed in harmony with the aesthetic of each reference.
The choice of materials played an essential role in this interpretation. The use of metals and ceramics allowed the tones, contrasts and atmospheres of the works to be carried into the exterior architecture of each watch. In this way, Hublot’s own materiality became an extension of the visual discourse proposed by the artist.
The project also highlighted the ability of contemporary watchmaking to act as a vehicle for cultural expression. Rather than limiting itself to simply placing an image on a dial, the collection explored how the design of a timepiece can engage in dialogue with universal artistic references, respecting the complexity of their origins and adapting them to an object of personal use.
Jeff Koons has built much of his career around appropriation, reinterpretation and the transformation of recognizable images. His collaboration with Hublot brought those principles into a sphere different from galleries and museums, while maintaining a reflection on the ways in which works of art persist, are reproduced and find new audiences. For Hublot, the alliance was framed within a trajectory of collaborations with figures from diverse creative disciplines. The maison has made the concept of Art of Fusion one of the pillars of its identity, applying it both to material and technical innovation and to encounters with sport, music, design and the visual arts.
The Hublot x Jeff Koons collection stands out precisely for its determination to avoid a literal approach to art. Each piece proposed a horological interpretation of the chosen work, with special attention to proportions, chromatic composition and finishes. That dimension turns the models into objects aimed both at watch enthusiasts and at collectors interested in the connections between design, artistic heritage and contemporary culture.
The revival of this project on Hublot’s platform confirms the continued relevance of a collaboration that explored the watch as a canvas, a technical object and a collectible. Through this series, the Swiss maison consolidated an interpretation of contemporary luxury in which watchmaking precision can coexist with the history of art, aesthetic experimentation and an international vision of creativity.
